and his Philosophy

Concerning any “truth claim”

you make in his class.

It is a basic principle of social science that our individual "stories" cannot, by themselves, provide an accurate picture of the frequency and prevalence of any social phenomenon or behavior.

This does not mean your point of view generated by your personal experiences does not have value, it does indeed…but only to you and you alone.

To understand the relative occurrence of a social behavior such as crime, what matters is systematic evidence, often best expressed as "rate information.”  For instance, "rate information" is the principle the Bureau of Justice Statistics (among others) uses in its research, and the same principle the FBI uses to gather information for the Uniform Crime Report/UCR, which is based on crimes per 100,000 residents, aka -- rates.

Without rate information based on actual counts of crime in the community, or violence behind bars, or whatever the phenomenon, there is no way to understand the prevalence of crime and violence on the streets or in prisons or elsewhere, or anything in Criminal Justice for that matter.

                       I am sure you understand!
